Built in the beginning of the 13th century, the Ha’amonga ‘a Maui is a stone trilithon located in Tonga, which is in the north of the island of Tongatapu. It consists of three giant stones – two upright and a lintel uniting them. The weight of the visible part of each upright stone is approximately 30-40 tons. These stones are made of coral limestone, mined just a few hundred meters away at the seacoast. As the stone is soft and fragile initially, it can be easily shaped into the desired form. However, the tones that are shaped and squared carefully became hard after some decades.
There are so many legends about the Ha’amonga’a Maui. A prominent story says Maui demigod made the trilithon, because handling such giant stones is virtually impossible for mortals. Its name, Ha’amonga means a stick with loads on both ends, which is carried over the shoulder. Thus, it means “A carrying stick of Maui”.
The area offers car parking and other facilities. Tourists can find guides easily and know about this place and its surroundings easily.
