Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre

Located in Kigali, Rwanda, the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre commemorates the Rwandan genocide in 1994. The best known and one of the most visited memorial places in Rwanda is built on the site where over 250,000 people are buried.

The remains were gathered from different districts of Kigali and were buried in the cemetery of this memorials site. Kigali City Council and the UK based Aegis Trust partnered to build Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre that was opened on the 10th anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide in April 2004.

The space of the site is partitioned into different parts, including three exhibition spaces that include the Genocide Archive of Rwanda, a library, a documentation center, an education center for peace and reconciliation, memorial garden and mass graves. Today, the centre serves as a permanent memorial to the victim of the genocide and to grieve the near and dear ones they lost during this one of the diabolic human atrocities ever. The memorial holds oral testimonies collected from different city areas, documents, publications, human bones and skulls that were treated for conservation as well as weapons, which were used during the genocide like machetes, clubs, swords, etc. Furthermore, the memorial contains objects like rosaries, photographs, shoes, identity cards, clothes, and pipes abandoned by victims.

The site of Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre is easily accessible. Visitors can access the memorial from one of the many hotels located in and around Kigali or also they can find it easily from the airport.
