Mafia Island is a part of archipelago of Tanzania and Zanzibar. The name “Mafia” is derived from the Arabic word morfiyeh. The island is governed from the mainland and is one of the six districts of Pwani region. The Mafia archipelago includes one large island that covers 394 square kilometers of area. It consists of several small islands out of which some are inhabited, like Chole Island that covers two square kilometers and is house to a population of 800. The Mafia Channel comprises of vast stretch of water flowing between the deltas of the Mafia Island and Rufiji River.

The island is known for its historical background that dates back to the 8th century. The Island played a significant role as a trade center between the people of East Africa and Far East and was used as a regular stop for the Arab boats. In 1890, the Mafia Island was undertaken by Germany. The Mafia Island received financial aid from the WWF to make a center for natural marine wildlife. The island was supported under the project of Rufiji-Mafia –kilwa to improve the financial conditions of the communities residing on the island along with the preservation of natural resources. Various activities like scuba diving and fishing attracts visitors.
