Castellani House is located at the Vissengen Road and Homestretch Avenue in George Town, Guyana. It is a 19th century building designed and constructed by Cesar Castellani between the year 1879 and 1882. Originally, the house served as residence for government officials but since 1993 it is being used as Guyana’s National Art Gallery. It was converted to an official residence in 1965 by Mr.Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham.
The house went through several changes and many additions were made to the house such as dormer windows were replaced with Demerara shutters and the ridge line was made higher than the tower. In 1928, under the guidance of Water commission, disposal systems were installed and with this addition the expansion of the uppermost northern and southern windows were eliminated. During 1942, a third story was added to the house and Hugh McGregor made further changes in the structure of house. During the year 1994-1996, the gallery’s first curator was Everley Austin followed by Elfriede Bissember until present. The House consists of over 700 works of art made by famous artists namely Stanley Greaves, Bernadette Persaud, Aubrey Williams, Dennis Williams Frank Bowling and E.R Burrowes.
