As my sister and I puttered along Interstate-4 on a Friday afternoon, inky rain clouds followed us; and a snarl of traffic sprawled out before us. Needless to say, when I did finally make it to the Spa at the Peabody I was in a frenzied state.
But no worries, just walking into the spa triggered instant relaxation mode. I was surrounded by rubber duckies, towels that looked very much like edible cupcakes and scents that artfully encouraged repose.
First things first, while it was extremely tempting to test out the signature mango ginger infusion or the tranquility body cocoon, I opted, instead, for the deep tissue massage. It is always a winner for weary muscles, albeit a process that can be a tad painful. After a week of frivolous fun and typing away on my laptop, my muscles were indeed wiped out.
During my 50-minute session, I added a little extra indulgence by including the paraffin wax treatment, which is said to help circulation and heals and soothes, too. Better yet, it makes your tootsies smell mighty nice.
Apres-treatment, I made a beeline for the hot tub where my sister was waiting (a day pass to enjoy spa amenities is $30). The knot in my shoulder – gone. The pain in my lower back – gone. Writer’s wrist – you guessed it – gone. It was in this sloth-like state that I checked out the steam room. Then back to the hot tub and straight to a cushy chair for some lounging.
Several hours passed while we successfully whiled away the afternoon. I was so relaxed, in fact, that 5 o’clock came and went, and I forgot to go watch the famous Peabody ducks waddle their way through the lobby and back to their $100,000 penthouse Royal Duck Palace (a tradition you can read more about here).
Suffice it to say, I was in heaven for those few hours; the only thing missing was magazines. Don’t get me wrong, there were a few small books here and there, but what I really was hoping for was a smattering of womens’ magazines. I was also sad to hear they no longer offer the much talked about Watsu treatment, an aquatic massage therapy that sounds delightful.
Overall, my time at the spa pretty darn perfect. Case in point: I was reinvigorated to the point that the Interstate-4 traffic on the way back home didn’t faze me one bit.
