I’ve been to Quebec City many times, but had never stayed at the recently opened Hotel Pur until my last visit. I had popped my head into the lobby once when I was out exploring the surrounding neighborhood of Saint-Roch on a previous trip, and knew I’d be back to check in and check it out.
This former Holiday Inn building has been totally revamped and is now the largest modern style hotel in the city, carving a niche for itself between the cookie-cutter economy chains, the tinier boutique hotels, and the grander historic properties. Walking into the brightly colored white-walled lobby immediately makes you feel like you are part of a sci-fi movie set. The efficient check-in process is completed in a matter of minutes and I’m on my way to my room.
The hallways are the complete opposite of the lobby, dimly lit with darker colored walls. Entering the room it’s back to the funkier vibe with mirrors, abstract paintings, and smatterings of orange décor. Each of the 242 spacious rooms includes complimentary Wi-Fi, a work station, MP3 compatible clock radio, full stocked mini-bar, flat screen television, Aveda bath products, and floor to ceiling windows offering panoramic views. However, I notice that the usually standard coffee maker in inauspiciously missing. I later discover a 24-hour coffee machine is available for guest use in the lobby, providing complimentary cappuccino, mocha, latte and regular brewed java, as well as a full selection of teas. The property also boasts “Quebec’s largest indoor pool”, according to their website. Located on the third floor, it offers great views of the surrounding skyline, and is located adjacent to co-ed sauna facilities and a cardio/weight center.
Located in lower Quebec City, Hotel Pur is conveniently located close to the main train station for those arriving by Via Rail or Amtrak, and across the street from the main local bus terminal as well. The surrounding neighborhood of Saint-Roch has recently experienced a revival, and is now home to many fine dining restaurants, hip lounges, and designer boutiques located along Rue Saint-Joseph and adjacent side streets. There are also two local brew pubs crafting unique infusions, and a couple of late night spots for dancing or catching live music acts. The neighborhood is also the ideal place for holiday shopping amid a very festive atmosphere, with illuminated street lights, decorative window displays, and the tallest Christmas tree in the city.
Tip – Guests may just want to stay put and check out the fabulous Table Restaurant located right on the premises. Open from morning until early evening, this spacious venue also functions as a lounge with occasional DJ nights ramping up the atmospheric vibes.
Niceties – reception has a selection of personal amenities for guests should you forgot the essentials. While you’re there look for the afternoon table of cookies and chocolates to go along with the java jolt. Also, be sure to look for the sticky note on your closet mirror for a complimentary drink at the bar.
Promotions – the hotel is currently running a couple of promotions, such as book two nights and get the third for free, and others offering breakfast and champagne in the room. The VIP Nightlife package provides a VIP pass for two to Maurice club with two complimentary drinks, roundtrip transportation, and full American breakfast.
Staying at the Hotel Pur is definitely a step in the direction of decadence!
