Friars Carse or Castle Ghost Hunt for the Ghost of Robbie Burns

Friars Carse CastleSet in 45 acres of woodland extending to the banks of the River Nith, Friars Carse or castle in English, with its magnificent paneled entrance hall and elegant staircase, offers guests a warm welcome with a well-furnished spacious lounge with views over the garden and river and a comfortable bar.

Friars Carse has close associations with Robert Burns. It was here in the Whistle Restaurant where the famous drinking competition was held by Captain Riddle for the prize of an ebony whistle: Riddle, the Ferguson of Craigdarroch, and Sir Robert Lawrie of Maxwelton drank until the last fell “under the table”- a contest in which was witnessed and put into verse by Rabbie Burns.

Friars Carse was also at the Burns Hermitage where he would sometime sleep and wrote his inscription to the then owner of Friars Carse “To the Memory of Robert Riddell” on the hermitage window with his diamond stencil (can now be seen at Ellisland Farm Museum).

Just a short walk from the hermitage along the River Nith lays Ellisland Farm where Burns wrote many of his most famous poems and songs including Auld Lang Syne and Tam o’Shanter.
