Founded as private collection of Nikolaus Von Himsel, a doctor of Riga, the museum houses the massive collection of objects representing Riga’s history. Because of its diverse collection of Riga’s art and natural science, large number of visitors visits the museum annually.
The museum aims at maintaining and promoting ancient Riga. Main attractions of the museum are its various permanent and temporary exhibitions that well portray the history of Riga. Permanent exhibition of the museum features Medieval Riga, Riga under the Polish and Swedish rule, origins of Riga, Riga and Riga citizens, Riga within the Russian empire, and origins of Riga. On the other temporary exhibitions of the museum displays the paintings and artistic works along with Riga’s history of coin making and collection of historical objects like pictures, furniture, silver, etc.
