American Airlines Celebrates 30 Years of Frequent Flyers

Proving that good things only get better with age, the American Airlines AAdvantage program, the world’s first frequent flyer program, turns 30 years old this year and customers can expect to see several special activities to celebrate the occasion.

Since its inception in 1981, AAdvantage members have earned billions of AAdvantage miles for flying, lodging, dining, shopping and much more. Those same customers have redeemed their miles for millions of awards, including flights, car rentals, hotel stays and countless lifetime memories.

“The 30th anniversary of AAdvantage is an incredible milestone for both American and our loyal customers whom we thank for making the program such a success,” said Maya Leibman, President – AAdvantage Loyalty Program. “Over the past three decades, AAdvantage has steadily offered more ways to earn miles, more flexibility when redeeming those miles for awards, and tremendous benefits to our elite status members. This value, along with the passion our members feel for the program, is why AAdvantage continues to lead the industry.”

AAdvantage continues to introduce a wide range of products and services to the program’s more than 66 million members. Today’s most popular program features include the option to book One-Way Flex Awards; a Mileage MultiplierSM option that allows customers to purchase double or triple AAdvantage miles during flight check-in; AAdvantageConnections.com, a site where customers can find the most current bonus mile offers available; and most recently, the capability to easily redeem miles online for car and hotel awards at an exceptional value for the member. AAdvantage members also enjoy the MilestonesTM online travel guide, where they can find and contribute unique travel content about American’s most popular worldwide destinations.

Earning miles has never been easier. The AAdvantage program offers a growing list of participating companies, which allows customers to earn miles when they do business with more than 1,000 airlines, hotels, car rental companies and retailers. In addition, American’s recently announced joint business with oneworld partners British Airways and Iberia gives AAdvantage members increased opportunities to earn and redeem AAdvantage miles on trans-Atlantic flights on all three carriers.

Being a member of the AAdvantage program is one of the best ways to stay in touch with the airline, keep up-to-date on program news and receive exclusive promotional offers.
