Strossmayer Gallery of Old Mastera exhibits the collection that is donated to the city by Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer in 1884. It forms a part of Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. The building comprises of about 4,000 artworks out of which some 250 are displayed at other museums, galleries or institutions in Croatia. Bishop Strossmayer, after his appointment as Bishop Dakoyo in 1850, had been buying paintings for 30 years. He mainly bought Italian art and Renaissance works belonging to Florence and Venice. He donated the collection to Croatian people and decided to represent these various artworks to the public by displaying it in the Renaissance palace in Zagreb, which was designed by the architect Friedrich von Schmidt and was publically opened in 1884 displaying 256 works of art.
The collection of the museum includes works of European painters dating back to 14th and 15th century. The items of the gallery have been classified into three sections namely Italian, Northern Europe and French and works by Croatian artists. In addition to these, the gallery also features Baska Tablet that serves as the best example of Glagolitic script.
