The Pearl of Florida’s Gulf Coast

We’re kicking back in a hot tub with a view of the beach, a breeze from the Gulf of Mexico rustling in the crowns of overhanging coconut palms, thinking things couldn’t get much more perfect. That’s when a bright orange butterfly flits overhead, completing the color palette of topaz sky, turquoise water, lush greenery and sparkling white sand. It’s an apt metaphor for a stay at the Sandpearl Resort on Florida’s Clearwater Beach: Just when you think you’re enjoying an unbeatable moment, it gets even better.

The resort has even figured out how to improve on a stunning Gulf Coast sunset: After the crowd lined up along the beachfront boardwalk that borders the property has seen the sun down and rung the traditional sunset bell, it’s time to make s’mores in a fire pit right there on the sand.

One of my favorite aspects of the Sandpearl is the way the resort blends the shoreline seamlessly into the pool and recreation areas. Whether you’re soaking in the aforementioned hot tub, swimming in the zero-entry pool or playing table tennis, you’re right in the midst of the gorgeous views you came here to enjoy. I’m solidly in the beach bum camp, but my husband and son prefer the pool. At the Sandpearl, you can enjoy both at the same time. (Another stroke of genius: One hot tub is reserved for guests 18 and up.) On the beach or poolside, you need only raise the flag on your lounge chair and a waiter will be headed your way to take your food or drink order. When you head back to your room to take shelter from the sun, you can still enjoy the waterfront from a balcony outfitted with comfy, low-slung Adirondack rocking chairs.

In the Sandpearl’s rooms, thoughtful touches abound, from sanitized television remotes to a spritzer of jasmine-scented pillow spray you can opt to use before turning in. If you can tear yourself away from the beach and pool, try morning yoga on a lawn overlooking the beach, stand-up paddleboarding tours, or a bite at Tate Island Grill, a casual beachfront restaurant with views that rival those of its upscale cousin, Caretta on the Gulf, also located on the premises.

Thanks to the Sandpearl for hosting my stay.
