Le Westin Hotel in Montreal is a perfect contrast between old world charm and new age luxury. The main entrance allows cars to drive into a grand hall that once housed the printing presses of The Gazette newspaper. The first thing you notice when pulling up to the lobby is a luminescent reflection right above the front entrance doors. It is one of only two hotels in Canada that has a see-through glass bottom swimming pool.
Once inside the lobby, there is an air of openness from the pod check in counters to the locally designed furniture and paintings that adorn the walls. As with all Westin’s, the check in process is quick and seamless. The hotel itself is actually the old Montreal Gazette offices, and the two separate sections are a reflection of the unique location it occupies, one side facing modern Montreal and the other a reflection of the past.
The fully renovated and somewhat traditional section is typical of most chain hotels. This is the section closest to the main entrance, facing the downtown core and across the street from the Palais des Congrès convention centre. The other grouping of rooms is more reflective of a boutique style hotel, with each room slightly different, and most having a few of old Montreal. It’s a clever concept that works well, and suits the needs of various guests needs. In total, there are 454 rooms to choose from.
The upgraded amenities are standard in all rooms, such as in room coffee maker, free wireless internet, robe, sitting area, distinctive bath products, and the brand name Heavenly Bed that makes it difficult to get up out of. The full wall to ceiling windows are an added bonus, especially if you grab a corner suite. Most come with a stand up shower however rooms with tubs can be requested. The property is also pets and bike friendly, with one floor designated for pet lovers.
There are plenty of places to grab a quick bite or a full dinner within minutes of the hotel, and many of Montreal’s must-see attractions are all within a few blocks walking radius. For those wanting to venture out a bit further, cabs and public transit are close by. As well, the more adventurous may want to try a Bixi bike. This is Montreal’s very successful bike sharing program with stations throughout the city, including just outside the hotel. Basically you can pick up a bike at the hotel and bike to a destination, then drop it off and pick up another somewhere else when you want to return. The first 30 minutes are free, and charges are minimal beyond that.
Onsite facilities include fine dining at gaZette, a farm-to-table inspired street level restaurant, or perhaps tapas and a dry martini at Reporter on the second level. Buffet breakfast is included in the room rate, and is served in the gaZette. The property is also a member of the Green Key Eco-Rating Program and has been certified with a 4-Key Rating.
Centrally located at the corner of St. Antoine and St. Pierre, this unique hotel is destined to become a destination of choice for discerning travellers.
