Most of this region is comprised of Sahara desert, and was once an important destination on trade routes. After Morocco tried to seize the city in the 1500’s, the mystical Tombouctou declined in its stature and status. It does, however, hold the 5th spot on the Hottest Place in the World List.

Nearby Al’Azizyah in Libya, Ghadames (or Ghadamis) is an oasis in the middle of the desert with a population of about 7000 each part of one of the seven clans. This ancient town was named Cydamus by the Romans and has been known to exist before the 6th century. The houses of the native Tuareg Berbers who live in Ghadames are made of mud, lime and palm tree trunks which help with the heat.

Al’Aziziyah or El Azizia in Libya is known to be the hottest place on earth for a temperature having been recorded September 13, 1922 which came to 136°F.
