One of the best places in the world today to see the world’s largest mammals is in the small town of Husavik in Iceland.
Husavik at Skjalfandi Bay, Iceland
Husavik is located on the shores of the Skjalfandi bay and has a population of approximately 2,500 people. It is a picturesque harbour town backed by mountains with snow peaks and most are involved in the fishing or tourism industry.
Found in the north-eastern area of Iceland, this little town has become one of the foremost places to whale watch because travelers can “watch” a number of whale species. During almost every tour, it is almost certain that whales can be spotted – and you won’t be left disappointed at the number of species going through the area, just south of the Greenland Sea.
The whale species that pass through this northern Iceland’s area include: Minke whales, Humpback whales, Fin whales, Sei whales, Orca or Killer whales, dolphins and harbour porpoises.
While Husavik is a small town, it offers restaurants that no doubt serve excellent seafood options. Cafes and restaurants line the harbour where you can watch boats come and go. Tours through the area are also available including Jokulsargljufar National Park where a 120 meter deep and 500 meter wide canyon lies, forming waterfalls and fascinating rock formations.
