Located on the Republic Square, Belgrade the capital of Serbia, the National Museum of Serbia is the largest and oldest museum in the country. The National Museum in Belgrade is the most significant museum of Serbia containing 34 archeological numismatic and historical collections.
Established on May 10, 1844, the museum has a collection of over 400,000 objects including numerous well-recognized national as well as international masterpieces. It also includes some of priceless monuments from the Roman era. A collection of sculptures from Vinca such as Lady of Vinca and Lepenski Vir are the main attraction of the museum. It also holds weapons, sculptures, helmets and other items from ancient Rome. The numismatic collection has more than 300,000 items that include coins, medals, rings, seals, and a golden medallion of Emperor Valentinian I.
The collection of drawings and prints of international artists has 2,446 items. Additionally, Yugoslav art collection has more than 6,000 items, including 17,00 paintings of Serbian authors from 18th to 19th century and 3,000 paintings from 20th century. However, the museum is closed for renovations now, but they open a gallery or two of the museum, or hold an exhibition at another location.
