3 Places to avoid this summer

You’ve scraped and saved money all year for your summer vacation.  The last thing you want is to be stuck inside the entire time because you didn’t know about the less-than-desirable conditions of your destination.

tripatlas.com/new has put together a few places to avoid travelling to this summer.

1)   Louisiana and other southern states

The most obvious reason to avoid the poor state of Louisiana is the BP oil spill that’s washing up on more than 200 km’s of its coast and beaches.  Similarly, the oil slicks originating from the Gulf of Mexico have reached the barrier islands of Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.

Then again, the beignets at Café du Monde in New Orleans would be enough to convince me to visit – oil-covered beaches, and all.

2)   Mexico & Caribbean

Buyer beware – don’t get blinded by the incredibly low-rates being offered at resorts in Cancun, Riviera Maya, and other nearby Caribbean islands.  June 1 to November 30 marks tropical storm & hurricane season in and around the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.  High-risk hurricane season goes from August to mid-October in/around Mexico and the southern U.S. states; while western Caribbean usually gets hit harder during late August & September.

Instead, opt for Caribbean islands like Aruba, Trinidad & Tobago, or Curacao – islands which are low-risk for hurricanes – but also offer great deals at this time of the year.

3)   Sunshine State

We love the Sunshine State and especially the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort – but it is sweltering hot throughout Florida at the moment – a regular day anywhere from Jacksonville to Miami will be an average of 30 degrees, feel like 40 degrees Celsius, and the humidity will make it feel worse.  To add to things, most days will be overcast with a chance of rain – though when it starts/ends and how long it goes for, you’ll never know. Florida is also a hotbed for tropical storms this time of the year – not the optimal conditions for a happy family vacation – despite the overcrowded theme parks.

Stick to visiting Florida during the Canadian winter to escape the cold, from Thanksgiving up until Easter for the best time to experience Florida.
