Bakong, Cambodia

Bakong located in Roluos, Cambodia, is the first temple to be built by Khmer Empire on a mountain. The temple’s structure is designed in the form of steeped pyramid and serves as the best example of the Khmer temple architecture.Bakong remained as state temple of Angkor for few years, and sometime during the 9th century the capital was moved to an area to the north side of Siem Reap, which led to the foundation of a new city that was built around the mountain temple called Bakheng.

The Bakong covers 900meters by 700 meters of area and is composed of three concentric enclosures that are divided by two moats with the main axis moving from east to west. The inner moat consists of remains of a wall and four gopuram that are arranged in the form of a cross and a wide causeway passes through it carved with seven headed nagas. The outer moat has only its boundary left and does not contain any wall or gopuram. There are remains of 22 satellite temples lying between the inner and outer moat. The closure of the temple also consists of several smaller buildings with the inner closure containing a laterite wall measuring 160 meters by 120 meters.
