Belgrade Fortress

Belgrade Fortress is the most impressive and well-known castle situated at the top of a hill in Belgrade city. It has a height of 125.5 meter. View from the top of hill overlooking the confluence of the River Sava and Danube is as amazing as it gets. Along the riverside are three streets and the railway, encircling the fortress.

Belgrade Fortress is the oldest and the core historical structure of the country that depicts the history of Belgrade itself. Initially, the Romans had built a fort at this site and in the late 1st century AD. It served as a permanent military camp for the Fourth Flavian Legion. This defensive structure was frequently razed to the ground. Several times, it went under massive renovations.

Today, the museum has a great historic significance of Belgrade. The fortress consists of Lower town, Upper town, and Kalemegdan Park. The Lower Town holds the slope towards the riversides from the peak. The Upper Town, turned into a park is popular because of its shady benches, sculptures, art pavilion, zoo, and amusement park. Additionally, the most of the preserved fortress ramparts and gates, Military Museum, St. Petka and Ruzica churches, and Roman Well are located in the Upper Town.
