Our Lady of Ljeviš Kosovo

Located in southern Kosovo,Our Lady of Ljeviš Kosovo is an Orthodox church of 14th century in the town of Prizren. The church was converted to a mosque during Ottoman Empire then again in 20th century converted back to an orthodox church. It is one of the oldest churches in Kosovo. King Milutin of Serbia commissioned the construction of the church. Its frescoes created in 1307 are recognized as a masterpiece of the 14th century church art. The church was built on the site of the ruins of an earlier Byzantine church. In 1990, Our Lady of Ljevis is designated as a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance. In 2004, due to the armed conflict in Kosovo, the church was destroyed completely by fire. In 2006, it was included in the UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger because of the unstable security situation. According to Italian experts majority of the famed frescoes can be restored, but implementation has to start yet. The graceful brick exterior and the location opposite the archaeological museum makes it worth to visit.
