Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu is a beautiful lake in the town of Kibuye, Rwanda that covers a total area of 2700 square kilometers and is 1460 meters above the sea level. Apart from being the largest freshwater lake in the entire region, Lake Kivu is also among the greatest lakes in the African continent.

Bordered between the Congo and Rwanda, Lake Kivu has huge vertically steep and green terraced hills around its surface area. The lake also holds the eighth-largest inland island of the world. You can take a boat out on the lake and explore some of the many tiny islands. Numerous towns that include Sake, Kalehe, Kabare, Goma and Bukavu are established on the shore of Lake Kivu. The scenic route along the lake is full of some spectacular views that include watching people woprking, cultivating bananas, sorghum, cassava, beans, rice, potatoes, and small, tiny coffee fields.

Three resort towns viz. Kibuye, Gisenyi, and Cyangugu are situated in the close proximity and a roller coaster road connects the resorts to the lake. Along the Lake Kivu, there are some are several beautiful villages and the sight of innumerable tiny brickworks, massive tea plantations and other surprises welcome those who have and eye for everything natural and beautiful.
