Lake Malawi, Mozambique

Lake Malawi also known as Lgo Niassa is an African Great Lake located between Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique. It is the second deepest and third largest lake in Africa and is the ninth largest in the world. It is home to more than 1000 species of Cichlids and is officially declared as a reserve by the Government of Mozambique. The oxicanoxic boundary of the lake is maintained moderately by the thermal gradients and small chemicals making it a meromictic lake.

Lake Malawi has a wide variety of species of fishes such as chambo, Nyyasalapia, Cichild, Kampango and large catfish are important source of food for the residents. However, the population of fishes is threatened by overfishing and water pollution. Painted hunting dog that was thought to be extinct in Malawi has been found by Kasungen National Park in a recent research near the western boundary of Malawi. Many species can be spotted around the Lake such as crocodiles, monkeys, hippopotamus and African fish eagles.
